Share and spread the joy of coffee

In this Nespresso Vertuo vs VertuoPlus review, we’ll be weighing up two of Nespresso’s best-selling coffee makers by outlining their core differences and similarities. This will include how they operate, the types of coffee each can brew, and the overall user experience you can expect to have with either model.

By the end of the article, you’ll understand the VertuoLine series inside out and what makes their innovative coffee machines so unique and loved by so many people worldwide.

What is Nespresso Vertuo?

Nespresso Vertuo Coffee and Espresso Machine by De'Longhi, Piano Black

Nespresso Vertuo is the first model of the Nespresso VertuoLine series. It incorporates an all-new way of making coffee using precision brewing techniques to extract the best in-cup results.

Using barcode reading scanners and special Nespresso VertuoLine pods, the Vertuo machine excels in delivering a more aromatic and rich crema. So enjoy your enriched cup of coffee or espresso.

The technology works by adjusting the parameters of the brewing method. This includes changing the capsule’s water volume, pressure, temperature, and rotational speed to brew coffee the way the roasters had intended accurately.

What is VertuoPlus?

As its name suggests, the VertuoPlus is a step up from the original Vertuo model. It incorporates several unique differences designed to deliver a more seamless user experience.

In almost every way, the VertuoPlus operates just like its predecessor. It uses precision brew technology and the same Nespresso Vertuo capsules with barcodes.

In addition to these features, the VertuoPlus saves counter space in your kitchen, featuring a portable water tank that can move from side to side. This allows you to position your VertuoPlus machine any way you like.

How are they different?

Two key differences between the Nespresso Vertuo and VertuoPlus machines are the automatic opening and closing feature of the VertuoPlus and its portable water tank.

Ultimately, the VertuoPlus coffee machine is designed to be a more versatile coffee maker that gives the user more storage options and greater flexibility in setting up your brewing station.

Furthermore, the VertuoPlus range is designed to be more lightweight than the Vertuo models. However, they also come with a shorter cable length than the Vertuo.  Something you may want to consider before you purchase a VertuoPlus.

Other differences include each model’s various design features. The original Vertuo model was built with a more compact style with no moveable water tank.

On the topic of water tanks, the VertuoPlus has a transparent water tank that lets you track how full it is. At the same time, the original Vertuo model comes with a silver patterned layer which may look beautiful but serves no real practical use.

Lastly, the Nespresso Vertuo machine features a larger capsule container compartment than its VertuoPlus successor, boasting a capacity of 13 capsules compared to the Plus’ 10 capsules.

How are they similar?

On the base level, the Vertuo and VertuoPlus Nespresso machines perform virtually the same tasks. They both brew Vertuo Nespresso capsules using barcode scanning technology and precision brewing methods.

They operate similarly, both using a one-touch brewing method. Of course, they are also both single-serve coffee machines (if you’re after a pot coffee machine, this probably isn’t for you!). Furthermore, both the Vertuo and VertuoPlus are only compatible with VertuoLine coffee pods, meaning they cannot brew OriginalLine Nespresso coffee capsules.

Other similarities include a water reservoir of about 40 ounces and a removable drip tray that can be used to capture excess coffee that drips. The tray can be removed to accommodate tall travel mugs for those “on-the-go” coffee lovers.

They also have similar product offerings and bundles. For example, both machines offering a package with an Aeroccino milk frother for brewing cappuccinos and lattes. They also each have versions manufactured by both DeLonghi and Breville.

The brewing options are identical between the Vertuo and VertuoPlus, offering single and double espresso shots of 1.35 and 2.7 oz, Gran Lungo of 5 oz, 8 oz, and a 14 oz Alto for super large coffee cup sizes.

What’s better about Nespresso Vertuo?

Nespresso Vertuo Next Coffee and Espresso Machine by De'Longhi, Dark Grey

Unlike the Nespresso VertuoPlus, the Nespresso Vertuo features a long cable cord of 33.46 inches. It’s significantly longer so you can spare some more distance between your machine and the power outlet.

The Vertuo also offers a larger capsule drawer, allowing you to store up to 13 used capsules before emptying it out. A huge step up in ease of maintenance from its VertuoPlus counterpart, which has a limit of 10 used capsules.

Surprisingly, the Vertuo is also significantly more compact than the VertuoPlus, incorporating smaller dimensions that take up slightly less room.

Moving onto performance, you may have a better hot coffee experience with the Nespresso Vertuo. This is because of its slightly higher heating power rating of 1350 watts compared to the Vertuo Plus’ 1300 watts.

Furthermore, your coffee cup is less likely to fall off due to an accident as the Vertuo uses a more uniform platform for the drip tray than the VertuoPlus. The Plus has an elevated drip tray, increasing the risk of an accident occurring.

Lastly, the Nespresso Vertuo is a little more affordable than the VertuoPlus, making it a great budget espresso machine for those who are satisfied without the Plus’ extra features.

What’s better about VertuoPlus?

The main “stand-out” feature of the VertuoPlus espresso maker is its adjustable water reservoir which allows you to move the container from side to side. This makes storing it on a tight counter space easier and may assist in refilling.

Another factor to consider with the water tank is that the VertuoPlus provides a transparent container so you can more easily keep track of the current water levels. This lets you take charge of the maintenance process rather than be hit with unpleasant surprises.

The VertuoPlus espresso machine is slightly more lightweight than the Vertuo, weighing in at 10.1 lbs compared to the Vertuo’s 10.85 lbs. In addition, thanks to its motorized lid functionality, you get a more effortless user experience with the VertuoPlus. It opens and closes on its own via the gentle push of a lever.

In comparison, the Vertuo machine requires more strain on the hand as you need to turn the lever to unlock the lid.

Who should get Nespresso Vertuo?

In essence, the Nespresso Vertuo is the perfect single-serve coffee machine for those who want to keep things simple.

It would also suit those on a budget as it is significantly more affordable. Vertuo’s longer cable length is also nice if your power outlet is in an undesirable spot on your kitchen counter space.

Furthermore, as the more affordable option, the Vertro offers Nespresso’s centrifugation technology and delicious crema at a lower price point. You’ll also enjoy the benefits of a larger used capsule container.

Who should get VertuoPlus?

The VertuoPlus is the perfect choice for those with limited counter space who need a creative solution to their storage needs. The VertuoPlus machine models come with a portable water tank that lets you adjust its position to the left, right, or just behind the machine as needed.

This water tank is also transparent, which suits people who want an easier time tracking how much water is remaining. The easy open and close switch for the capsule container is also an excellent reason to go for the VertuoPlus. It creates less strain on your hand through its effortless operation. You’ll also find similar effort-saving benefits with its lightweight design.

Features

Water Reservoir

Nespresso VertuoPlus Coffee and Espresso Maker by Breville

The most prominent differences between the Vertuo and VertuoPlus are all related to the water reservoir. While they are both the same size encompassing a 40-ounce capacity, the VertuoPlus offers an adjustable water tank for extra convenience.

In contrast, the Vertuo has a more aesthetically pleasing design with its chrome-layered container. However, it’s not as practical as the VertuoPlus. As such, the VertuoPlus is the clear winner.

Winner: VertuoPlus

Lid Functionality

Another one of the more notable differences between the Vertuo and VertuoPlus is the different lid operation methods. The Vertuo uses a lever that must be turned with some effort to open the compartment.

On the other hand, the VertuoPlus uses a gentle push button design to pop open the lid. Of course, nobody wants a morning cramp in their hand on a cold morning, so the winner again goes to the effortless VertuoPlus machine on this occasion.

Winner: VertuoPlus

Pod Compartment

Opening up the pod compartment is one matter, but another critical factor to consider is the capsule capacity of each individual model. For example, the VertuoPlus features a compartment that fits 10 Vertuo capsules before maintenance is required. On the other hand, the Nespresso Vertuo offers 33% more space with a maximum storage capacity of 13 Vertuo capsules.

Vertuo wins this contest as the better Nespresso machine on this occasion.

Power

Nespresso Vertuo Next with Aeroccino 3 by Breville, Black

Both the Vertuo and VertuoPlus machines make brewing coffee exceptionally easy with the push of a button. In addition, the taste of freshly ground coffee beans is ever present in the aromatic and rich Vertuo Line capsules.

While it may go unnoticed to the average coffee drinker, the Vertuo has a secret reputation for being a little hotter. It brews hotter than the VertuoPlus due to its higher heating power rating of 1350 watts versus the Plus’ 1300 watts (1). Thus, for lovers of hot coffee, the Nespresso Vertuo is the (slightly) better choice for delivering piping hot espresso every time!
