Understanding how to reset your Nespresso machine is an essential skill to get your coffee machine back on track when disaster strikes. Such issues could include problems extracting coffee pods, brewing incorrect cup sizes, or the wrong auto-shut-off duration.

How to reset Nespresso OriginalLine machines
Step 1: Turn the machine off
No matter your Nespresso machine’s model, the first step to resetting is always to power the machine off. To reset Nespresso Pixie, Citiz, Essenza, or Lattissima One models, press the Lungo and Espresso brew buttons simultaneously until the lights go dark. This indicates that the machine is now off and ready to commence the factory reset process.
Descaling your Nespresso requires a similar process to start.
Alternatively, you can wait approximately 10 minutes for the auto shut-off feature to kick in and automatically turn off the machine. For the Nespresso Creatista model, you will have access to a display screen to turn off the machine more quickly.
This is even easier with the Nespresso Prodigio, as it allows you to connect your machine to your phone via the Nespresso app. Then, you can take full control over the coffee volume and auto-shutoff settings.
Step 2: Press and hold the Lungo button
The next step is pretty straightforward and applicable for most Nespresso machines except for the Lattissima One, Nespresso U, and Creatista range. We’ll explain those separately. Essentially, if your Nespresso machine has Lungo and Espresso buttons, then you need to hold the Lungo button for five seconds until the lights start blinking.
You must follow special instructions for machines without these buttons as outlined below. This includes machines that differ from the Nespresso Essenza Mini machine or Nespresso Citiz models. For the Nespresso U range, you will need to hold down the Lungo button and the Espresso button simultaneously for about four seconds.
Perhaps the most unique Nespresso machine is the Creatista, which has a convenient digital display. To reset Nespresso Creatista models, you must use the dial to navigate to the Factory Reset option. Then, confirm the reset as denoted by the checkmark symbol.
To reset the Nespresso Gran Lattissima model, first, remove the milk jug from the machine. This is a critical step as you will hold the milk button for three seconds to enter menu mode. If your milk jug is still attached, your machine may attempt to dispense hot milk instead.
Once the descaling and clean LED lights start flashing, press the milk button once to select factory reset, then press it once again to confirm reset. At this point, your machine’s factory default settings have been restored. Now, your Nespresso Lattissima machine is ready to begin brewing once again.
Step 3: Observe blinking lights
Once you’ve held down the appropriate buttons of your Nespresso machine, some LED lights should blink to indicate the commencement of factory reset mode. These lights will blink fast three times, and then gradually slow down. The initial fast blinking stage indicates the machine is restored to factory settings.
For the Nespresso Lattissima Touch-Screen model, you will observe all three buttons blinking to indicate that the machine was restored to factory settings. These include the Espresso button, Lungo button, and milk froth button. The Nespresso Creatista model will not indicate its reset by LED lights, but will instead automatically exit, shut down the machine, and reboot on its own.
Step 4: Wait for machine to warm up
It is important not to rush into brewing coffee immediately after performing the factory reset of your Nespresso machine. It could cause a malfunction. As such, you need to wait as the machine heats up, as indicated by the slow blinking that commences after the three fast blinks.
Once the lights stop blinking and remain illuminated, that is the indication that your machine is ready to start brewing coffee.
Of course, the Nespresso Creatista indicates its readiness differently, as it simply turns off and reboots upon restoring its default settings. As such, you need to wait until the machine has restarted, and you will be able to begin brewing with the original factory settings in place.
For the Lattissima model, the menu mode will exit automatically after the three blinks, and the machine will instantly be ready to brew.
Step 5: Keep or change your factory settings
At this stage of the reset process, your machine will be ready to brew coffee at the original factory settings. More specifically, these settings come with a 40mL espresso cup size, a 110mL Lungo cup size, and an automatic power-off mode of nine minutes. If you are happy with these settings, you can turn off the machine by holding down the Lungo and Espresso buttons.
On the other hand, if you are unhappy with the default settings, you will need to set your customized brew size and auto-off settings. For the Creatista model, you can opt-out of the factory default setting by selecting the “X” checkmark on the confirmation screen.
Other models such as the Nespresso Prodigio can be reset through your phone by syncing your machine with the Nespresso app. You can control all the brew sizes and auto-shut-off settings from a centralized platform. To reset factory settings, click on “Machine status” and select “Unpair this machine.”
How to reset Nespresso VertuoLine machines
Step 1: Turn the machine off (if needed)
Like the Nespresso OriginalLine machine, the VertuoLine also has slightly different methods between models to perform a factory reset. Overall, however, the method to reset Nespresso Vertuo machines differs greatly from its OriginalLine predecessor.
This is because of the vast differences in design and mechanics that result in a superior brewing method. It applies precise extraction via centrifusion technology.
For the VertuoPlus and VertuoPlus Deluxe models, you will need to turn the machine off by pressing the lever down for three seconds. For all other Vertuo models, you must keep the machine on to commence the factory reset. Refer to your user manual to know which category your machine falls under and proceed from there.
Step 2: Eject used coffee capsules
The next thing to ensure your machine is ready to restore factory settings is to eject any coffee capsule that is inside the capsule compartment. To do this, unlock the head and open it up to remove any used coffee pods still inside. For the VertuoPlus and VertuoPlus Deluxe models, you can skip this step as it is not necessary to begin the reset.
Step 3: Close head in unlocked position
For the Nespresso Vertuo, Vertuo Next, and Vertuo Evoluo coffee maker models, you will need to close the machine head after ejecting the capsule from the machine. It is important to keep the lever handle in the “UNLOCKED” position after you’ve closed it.
This is so that you can continue operating the machine’s backend and adjusting its settings without putting it into brew mode.
Step 4: Enter factory reset mode
This is where you will need to pay special attention to the type of Vertuo model you own, as the method of entering factory reset mode differs significantly. Therefore, from this point on, you will need to do a little more than the other models to get into the factory settings.
Firstly, you will need to navigate the Special Functions menu before getting to the factory settings. To do this, push the brew button denoted by the coffee mug icon and hold the lever down simultaneously for about three seconds. Once this time has passed, a steady orange light will blink to confirm that you have entered the Special Functions menu.
From here, you will need to press the lever down three times to enter the factory settings confirmation finally. It is important to note that you should not hold the lever down at any point during this process.
At this stage, you need to push the brew button, again denoted by the coffee mug icon, to confirm the coffee reset option for your Nespresso VertuoPlus or Vertuo Plus Deluxe.
For all other models, including the Nespresso Vertuo, Vertuo Next, and Evoluo range, there is no Special Functions menu that you need to get through. This means you can skip straight to the factory settings as soon as you’ve ejected any capsules lurking in your machine.
You will need to push the coffee mug button five times within three seconds, and the machine will do the rest to reset your Nespresso machine.
Step 5: Observe the blinking lights
One thing all Nespresso machines have in common is that they use blinking LED lights to indicate the completion of the factory reset (1). However, while the Nespresso OriginalLine machine uses a steady green light to signal a successful machine reset, the VertuoLine machine uses an orange light instead.
Once again, however, there is a notable difference between the VertuoPlus range and all the other Vertuo models.
If you own a Nespresso VertuoPlus or VertuoPlus Deluxe machine, then you will notice an orange light that blinks three times rapidly before turning into a steady green color. Like its OriginalLine predecessor, this steady green light indicates that your machine has been restored to factory settings.
For the rest of the Vertuo machines, you’ll need to check for a different indicator pattern.
If you own a Vertuo or a Vertuo Evoluo model, the green light won’t blink or flash at any stage of the factory reset process. Instead, the coffee cup button will blink orange to confirm it has been set to the default factory settings.
