Nespresso Evoluo vs. Vertuo: Which is the right choice?

Share and spread the joy of coffee

The Nespresso Evoluo vs. Vertuo debate is tough to wrap one’s head around. After all, both machines are so similar on a fundamental level. In truth, each model’s unique features are critical “make or break” areas for many coffee lovers.

Hence, we’ve written this article to clearly outline the differences between the Nespresso Evoluo and Vertuo coffee machines so you can choose the one that’s right for you.

What is Nespresso Evoluo?

The Nespresso Evoluo is a newer model that was designed and manufactured after the initial release of the first VertuoLine model. It is aimed to fix some of Vertuo’s weaknesses and offer a slightly different line of operation in the hopes that it could tap into a wider audience.

The name “Evoluo” comes from an Esperanto word meaning “evolution” (1). It alludes to its intended design, delivering an evolved version of the Nespresso Vertuo.

One step up from the original Vertuo espresso maker is that the Evoluo machine is built with a large water tank of 54 ounces. That makes it generally a bulkier build than its predecessor. On that note, it also has a large used capsule container capacity of 17 large mug capsules, meaning the number of refills required is significantly less.

Furthermore, the Evoluo retains all of its predecessor’s ability to deliver delicious coffee through VertuoLine’s iconic centrifusion technology. It uses barcode scanning brewing to deliver the aroma, richness, and crema as the roasters intended with every cup.

What is Vertuo?

Vertuo is an umbrella term that encompasses all of Nespresso’s VertuoLine machines. Still, for the sake of this comparison, we’ll be referring to the original Vertuo.

The first of its kind, the original Vertuo coffee machine introduced the revolutionary centrifusion technology. It uses centrifusion to extract more precise coffee flavors and aromas from the unique VertuoLine capsules.

Also derived from an Esperanto word, Vertuo is a derivative of “Virtuoso” meaning “master of an expertise.” A concept that Nespresso continues to strive for through its advanced range of coffee makers.

The Vertuo espresso maker comes with a 40-ounce removable water tank size that accommodates about 5 cups of coffee before a water refill is needed. Additionally, it comes with a pod storage container that holds 13 large Vertuo capsules and up to 20 small-sized Vertuo capsules.

The Vertuo coffee maker brews cup sizes from 1.35 oz espresso shots up to 14 oz with a total of 5 brew sizes. This gives you the full spectrum of single-serve coffee options.

How are they different?

The main difference between the Vertuo and the Evoluo is the water reservoir capacity. The Vertuo uses a 40-ounce water tank, while the Evoluo sports a larger 54-ounce water tank, allowing you to brew about 7 cups of coffee before a refill of water is necessary.

On the topic of larger-sized features, the Evoluo also bests the Vertuo in capsule capacity. It boasts a large 17 capsule limit compared to Vertuo’s smaller 13 capsule limit.

Furthermore, there is a slight difference in their respective machines’ sizes, dimensions, and weight. The Evoluo is the bulkier and heavier of the two, coming in at 11 lbs compared to the Vertuo’s slightly more compact 10.8 lbs.

In terms of design and aesthetics, these two machines differ in their colors and layout. The Vertuo sports a sleek black color combined with silvery chromium. The Evoluo has a warmer look with its soft titanium color.

In addition, you’ll find the Evoluo to be slightly taller and come with a flatter, square-shaped top to the brew head. Compared to the Vertuo’s slightly shorter rounded top that offers a more modern aesthetic.

Finally, the Evoluo is more powerful in performance. It offers 1600 watts of power output compared to the Vertuo’s 1350 watts. This means you could potentially get a hotter cup of coffee with the Evoluo.

How are they similar?

The Vertuo and Evoluo are practically identical in their operation. They both use the iconic precision brewing system that the VertuoLine machines are known for.

The machines are designed to take in Vertuo-compatible capsules and scan the barcodes for the necessary data. From there, the machine works to adjust its parameters such as the rotations per minute, water volume, and flow rate to optimally extract the flavor and aroma from the capsule being brewed.

With such a fundamental base shared between these two models, it’s only natural that there is plenty of similar features. These include the water reservoir design, the removable drip tray, and the five cup sizes.

In terms of performance, both machines can heat up in as little as 15 seconds. Both these machines can only brew VertuoLine capsules.

What’s better about Nespresso Evoluo?

The clear advantage of the Nespresso Evoluo is its larger water tank and larger coffee pod container. The benefits of which are all linked to an easier maintenance experience.

Ultimately, the Evoluo allows you to brew up to 2 cups more than the Vertuo before needing a water refill. Likewise, it can brew up to 4 cups more than the Vertuo before emptying out the pod storage container is necessary.

Another advantage of the Evoluo is its greater power output. So, theoretically, you can brew hotter coffee for those seeking a more penetrative cup of coffee and espresso.

What’s better about Vertuo?

The Vertuo is a little more compact and lightweight than the Evoluo. So, you may benefit from it if you have tighter counter space or could use the extra room for other appliances.

The smaller water tank means more refills. Still, for an individual who is the sole user of the machine, it has more than enough reservoir size for a negligible difference.

Finally, the lower power output of the Vertuo could be seen as an advantage depending on the user due to energy efficiency.

Who should get Nespresso Evoluo?

Ultimately, the Nespresso Evoluo is a slightly bulkier, slightly more powerful machine. However, both are great at delivering that great cup of coffee VertuoLine machines are renowned for.

One more factor for which is best is the number of users. The Evoluo would be the better machine for more people using the same machine as it needs fewer water refills.

Nobody wants to be bothered refilling water and emptying out capsule containers all the time. So, minimizing these aspects as much as possible would go a long way should you choose the Evoluo for your next Nespresso machine.

Who should get Vertuo?

The Vertuo is a little more “humble” than the Evoluo. It features a smaller water tank size, smaller used capsule container, and a more cost-efficient way of brewing coffee.

As such, I’d recommend the Vertuo for smaller households with fewer users or individuals and couples. Then, you likely won’t feel much of a burden with the maintenance process.

Furthermore, the Nespresso Vertuo espresso machines are generally cheaper than the Evoluo series. Therefore, it would be an excellent choice for budget buyers who are not interested in the additional features of the Evoluo.

Features

Water Reservoir

While the Nespresso Evoluo has the larger 54 oz water reservoir, some may benefit from the smaller 40-ounce reservoir offered by the Vertuo. It’s a lighter design that could potentially save you on counter space.

But, of course, the vast majority would still prefer the larger water tank as it means less refill time. Thus, when it comes to the bout between Nespresso VertuoLine vs. Evoluo, the general consensus is “the bigger, the better.”

Pod Storage

In a similar sense, people would much prefer a larger capsule capacity that minimizes the maintenance required. As a result, the Nespresso Evoluo can hold up to 17 large Nespresso Vertuo capsules before emptying out the container.

In comparison, the original Nespresso VertuoLine models can only store up to 13 used capsules at a time. Albeit, this does make for a more compact machine overall.

Regardless, the victor once again goes to the Nespresso Evoluo for its ease the maintenance so you can focus on what truly matters, drinking a perfect cup of coffee!

Design

Evoluo machines are a little heavier and bulkier than other VertuoLine machines, sporting larger dimensions that take up more counter space. Furthermore, the Vertuo machine has a more aesthetically pleasing design with its sleek black color and silver chromium design.

Couple that with a more practical construction that can save you on counter space and be a bit easier to move around, and the Vertuo machine takes its first (and only) clear win over the Nespresso Evoluo!

Winner: Vertuo

Performance

This is tricky because the Evoluo machine features a higher power output of 1600 watts compared to Vertuo’s 1350 watts. As a result, it uses more power, which means you’ll be paying a little more for electricity through its operation.

However, the Nespresso Evoluo coffee machine excels in delivering a piping hot cup of coffee. This may not be quite as attainable with VertuoLine machines, including the Nespresso VertuoPlus and VertuoPlus Deluxe models, all of which come with 1350 watts of power output.
