How Much Caffeine in Nespresso? Is it More Than Coffee?

Share and spread the joy of coffee

How much caffeine in Nespresso capsules is a valid question if you are mindful of your caffeine consumption. Nespresso machines are known to be easy to use. Just pop a Nespresso coffee pod into the machine, and you will enjoy your delicious cup of coffee in no time.

However, not all coffee blends are the same. Some can even have twice as much caffeine in them as other pods. This is a significant difference to know, especially if you are sensitive to caffeine or just want to be mindful about the amount of caffeine you are ingesting. Many people find moderate coffee consumption acceptable but may feel jittery or on edge if they drink too much.

Unfortunately, the answer to Nespresso capsules’ caffeine contents is not cut and dry. You can’t find the information easily, and many differences exist based on the types of capsules used. In this article, we will break down the differences to help you better determine the right kind of Nespresso coffee capsules for your desired level of caffeine.

Caffeine content

The average Nespresso original capsule has 73 mg of caffeine. Generally speaking, each Nespresso capsule has between 60 and 150 mg of caffeine. However, there is a caffeine range based on the type of capsule used. For example, the blend and roast level will affect the amount of caffeine in a capsule.

There are also differences based on the temperature of the water used, the brewing time, and the water-to-coffee ratio.

The Cosi has the lowest amount of caffeine among the regular capsules at 59 mg. The Palermo Kazaar has the highest caffeine content at nearly 120 mg. There is a range of capsules in between these two options as well.

Additionally, there are also decaf capsules available. These have caffeine amounts of less than 3 mg each.

What is in a Nespresso pod

The capsules contain a few grams of finely ground coffee beans. The capsules are aluminum and contain ground coffee beans similar to what you would put in your drip coffee maker or espresso machine.

How caffeine is measured

Nespresso capsules are considered to be some of the best options for your coffee machine. This is because Nespresso’s caffeine measurement system is stricter than what other coffee companies use. Their system is based on the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) guidelines and recommendations.

The EFSA recommends that caffeine should not be greater than 150 mg of caffeine per liter (1). Though there is a range of Nespresso capsule varieties, they fall below this guideline.

Baseline caffeine estimates

Nespresso has published caffeine content guidelines, but the amount of caffeine in a specific capsule is not readily known. For example, Nespresso guidelines indicate that single espresso capsules typically have 60 – 150 mg of caffeine. That is quite an extensive range!

When you compare Nespresso caffeine content to a plain cup of coffee, you will find the caffeine content to be in the middle of the range. For example, a standard strength 8-ounce cup of medium-roasted coffee has about 100 mg of caffeine, or near the midpoint of the published range for Nespresso capsules.

Capsule style

The capsule-style used will affect the amount of caffeine in the cup of coffee. For example, a single espresso capsule will have less caffeine than a double espresso capsule.

Capsule version

The capsule version used is also essential in determining the amount of caffeine. For example, OriginalLine capsules have an average of 60 mg in regular capsules and 80 mg of caffeine in Lungo capsules. The VertuoLine capsules, on the other hand, have more caffeine content.

They average around 105 mg of caffeine per capsule, with some varieties reaching 150 mg. Therefore, while caffeine can vary wildly, it is safe to assume that Vertuo capsules will contain more caffeine than the original pods.

If you are unsure which type of pod you use, you can tell the difference based on the shape. For example, a Vertuo capsule is a more circular shape, while an OriginalLine pod is deeper and looks more like a cup than a circle.

Nespresso intensity scale

“Intensity” is the word Nespresso uses to indicate how strong or flavorful coffee is. Options include mild, extra intense, and intense.

Mild coffee has low acidity and more muted flavors, while a dark roast blend with moderate caffeine levels is intense. Extra intense is reserved for bold blends with high caffeine content.

The intensity rating does not explicitly refer to the caffeine content but rather the coffee’s body, bitterness, and roast level. For example, a higher intensity rating means that the coffee is heavier, more bitter, and more flavorful.

However, in many instances, higher intensity coffee will also make stronger coffee with more caffeine content. This is because more robust flavors are connected to more Robusta beans, a coffee bean with more flavor than the standard Arabica coffee beans.

Be aware, however, that a higher intensity does not refer to more caffeine in every situation. For example, a darker roast is more intense but does not necessarily have more caffeine content.

There may also be differences in the amount of coffee in each capsule. This will affect the intensity and the caffeine content separately. Essentially, the intensity scale may hint at the relative amount of caffeine in a Nespresso capsule. Still, it is not a perfect representation of the caffeine level your cup of coffee will have.

How does Nespresso compare to other coffee options?

Typically, the amount of caffeine in Nespresso pods is slightly lower than in other types of specialty coffee. Unfortunately, this means you will need to drink more Nespresso coffee to experience the same boost you receive from regular coffee.

Another option is to enjoy an intense blend option from Nespresso. Unfortunately, these options tend to have about 25% more caffeine content.

Decaf coffee

There are a variety of Nespresso decaffeinated coffee capsules available. These can be a good option if you are trying to limit your caffeine content. However, be aware that just because you choose decaf does not mean that there is no caffeine content.

The amount of caffeine will depend on where the coffee beans were sourced. For example, beans from South America often have more caffeine than those sourced elsewhere. It is not uncommon for there to be 3 milligrams of caffeine per serving in Nespresso decaf pods.

Vertuo capsules also tend to contain more caffeine. Vertuo decaf has about 10 mg of caffeine, while the original line only has about 3 mg. According to Nespresso, the decaf capsules contain no more than 12 mg of caffeine.

Nespresso OriginalLine

If you are concerned about your caffeine consumption, you must know the caffeine content in your capsules. Unfortunately, that information is not readily available on the U.S. Nespresso website. However, some information is available for the OriginalLine capsules.

The OriginalLine pods are available in three different sizes: ristretto, espresso, and lungo. The ristretto pods make .85 ounces. The espresso capsules are used to prepare 1.35 ounces, and the lungo capsules will make 3.7 ounces.

Among the OriginalLine coffee pods, the Palermo Kazaar has the most caffeine. It offers 120 mg of caffeine for a Ristretto. It has about three times more caffeine than the average Nespresso capsule.

The most popular original line of Nespresso pods has between 55 and 65 mg of caffeine. Examples include Cosi, Roma, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. Options such as Tokyo, Cape Town, and Vienna have 77 – 85 mg of caffeine, while the Palermo Kazaar has 125 mg of caffeine. As you can see, the Nespresso caffeine content can vary based on the capsule used.

This makes it more challenging to know exactly how much caffeine you are consuming.

Nespresso VertuoLine

The caffeine content for the Nespresso Vertuo capsules is more difficult to find. The Nespresso website provides a wide range of caffeine content for each size pod, but specifics are not provided.

For the VertuoLine, there are five main sizes. Espresso is 1.35 ounces. Double espresso capsules prepare 2.7 ounces. Gran Lungo capsules will make 5 ounces. The Mug option prepares 7.8 ounces, and the Alto capsules are used to make 14 ounces.

Most popular Vertuo pods contain 120 – 200 mg of caffeine. Examples include Carmel Cookie, Odacio, Solelio, Fortado, and Giornio.

However, some options fall outside this range as well. For example, alto options such as Alto Intenso XL or Dolce XL contain 228 – 350 mg. Half Caffeinato contains approximately 90 mg of caffeine, and the Altissio or Voltesso espresso options have around 60 mg of caffeine.

Fill your own

If you want more control over the amount of caffeine in your morning coffee, consider buying a reusable Nespresso pod. This will allow you to fill the pod with high caffeine coffees of your choice if you want more caffeine or a different coffee blend if you want less caffeine.

While Nespresso caffeine content is not exactly easy to pinpoint, a variety of Nespresso capsules are available on the market, so you can find a caffeine content level that you are comfortable with. You can also customize your caffeine amount by refilling a reusable Nespresso capsule instead of using a single-serve standard capsule.

How much caffeine in Nespresso FAQ

How much caffeine is in a Nespresso capsule?

Nespresso capsules typically have between 60 and 150 mg of caffeine. However, the exact amount varies based on various factors.

Is there more caffeine in Nespresso than regular coffee?

It depends on the type of pod used. If the capsule is designed to brew more coffee, such as an Alto capsule that makes 14 ounces, it will have more caffeine than regular coffee. The blend type will also affect the amount of caffeine.

Is Nespresso stronger than coffee?

This also depends on the type of coffee and the style of capsule being used. Typically, the Nespresso system averages slightly lower caffeine levels than traditional coffee.

Does Nespresso intensity mean more caffeine?

No, intensity is not directly tied to the amount of caffeine in the capsule. Instead, it is related to the type of coffee, how strong or flavorful it is, and the type of roast, such as light roast, medium roast, etc.

How much caffeine is safe to consume?

According to the FDA, healthy adults can consume 400 mg of caffeine daily without experiencing dangerous negative effects. However, some people are more sensitive to caffeine, and the safe level depends on how quickly your body breaks it down, so not everyone will have the same caffeine threshold.
