How Much Coffee To Put In A Reusable K Cup For The Perfect Cup of Coffee

Share and spread the joy of coffee

When I take my dog out for his 5:30 am walk, thinking about my morning coffee keeps my pace up. That first sip is my morning delight. The problem is that no matter which K-cup I use in my Keurig, the coffee never seems strong enough.

I decided to make the switch to reusable K-cups so that I could use my favorite coffee beans in my quest for the perfect cup of java.

I wondered if there was a way to brew my coffee as strong as I like it. Not only that, but I wanted to have a sustainable method and less waste. Reusable K cups seemed like the ideal solution.

The next question was, how much coffee to put in a reusable K-cup?

Here are the results of my experiments using reusable k cups.

How much coffee to use in refillable K-cups

The biggest issue to figure out is how much coffee to use when using a reusable K-cup is the size of your coffee cup. If you’re brewing a one-cup mug, you’ll need more coffee than the 6-ounce cup. The Specialty Coffee Association of America recommends using 10 grams of coffee grounds for a 6-ounce cup.

You’ll need to adjust that amount to your taste and cup size.

How to measure the coffee for your K-cup coffee

When you open the lid of your reusable K-cup, you’ll see a fill line. I found that I still got weak coffee if I loosely filled the K-cup up to the line. So my solution was to pack the coffee grounds into the pod up to the fill line.

Also, the water you use makes a big difference in the flavor of your coffee. If you have soft water, the coffee doesn’t dissolve as well in the water. Because of this, you end up with a bland cup of coffee.

Your best bet is to buy water with minerals added. The coffee compounds that hold the flavor bind with the minerals as the water flows through the k cup. Avoid buying distilled water because the minerals are filtered out.

I often wondered how coffee pods brew coffee so quickly. Finally, after a little research, I discovered the brewing process of these convenient pods.

The K-cup is a small plastic container. Inside the container is a paper filter. The filter holds the coffee. This is similar to the large filters in a regular coffee pot.

The filter and coffee are sealed with an aluminum foil cover into the plastic K-cup. Then, you place the whole plastic cup in your Keurig.

The water heats once you fill the water reservoir and engage the brew button Keurig. When the lights flash, press which size cup you want to brew.

K-cup coffee brews coffee quickly because of the intricate tubes, and pumping system inside the Keurig machine. The heated water pumps through the silicone tubes to the heating element.

The hot water flows through the hole at the top of the K-cup, starting the brewing process. The resultant coffee flows out the bottom of the K-cup and into your mug.

If you’ve been using store-bought K-cups, you’re missing out on the many benefits of brewing beverages with a reusable K-cup.

  • Save money
  • Personalized coffee flavor
  • Coffee bean choice
  • Better tasting coffee
  • Reduce waste
  • Sustainable

Reusable coffee pods are an eco-friendly way to use your Keurig and save money at the same time. Sometimes, you might want to brew more than one cup. In this case, a French press is a sustainable option.

What beans should I use in my reusable K-cup?

Whether you prefer flavored or traditional coffee beans when brewing beverages, you can choose any type of beans. The trick to making a good cup of coffee with a refillable K-cup is in the grind.

If you buy whole beans, grind them to a medium to fine grind. This helps the water flow slowly through the coffee, picking up as much flavor as possible. When using ground coffee, check the bag for the type of grind. Coarse coffee grounds allow the water to pass through the grounds too quickly, resulting in a weak cup of coffee.

What type of disposable K-cups should I use?

Since the development of the Keurig brewer, it has made its way into almost 41 percent of American homes. The one drawback about the Keurig is the harm to the environment with the wasteful plastic K-cups.

This is the reason many people have switched to refillable K-cups. But, before you buy the first reusable K-cup you see, make sure it’s compatible with your single-serve coffee maker.

Not all reusable K-cups are the same make and style. Most popular reusable k-cups are compatible, but some less known types might not fit your machine.

Check the model number of your Keurig and compare it to the filter holder compatibility list.

Also, consider the durability of the K-cup. You want to make sure it can stand up to the pressure of the water as it flows through the cup. For your convenience, you also want it to be dishwasher safe.

Most reusable K-cup filters are either stainless steel or BPA-free plastic with a metallic mesh.
